Electronic messages that you can update

LED Scrolling Displays & Boards

An LED scrolling display is an electronic message board that uses LED modules to show changing text, numbers and other supported content. It communicates notices, prices, schedules or announcements that can be updated without replacing a printed sign.

Halo Technologies assembles, installs, configures and supports LED scrolling boards from Kattappana, Idukki, Kerala. We help select the size, modules and controller around your viewing distance, environment and message requirements.

An LED scrolling display is one type of digital signage. Customers also call it an LED scrolling board, LED message display or electronic LED display board. These names describe the same message-display concept; the exact hardware and features still need to be selected.

From a message to the LED modules

The controller stores or receives the content and sends display data to the LED modules. Power supplies provide the electrical power the components need. The enclosure, wiring and mounting complete the installed system.

  1. Prepare the messageChoose the text, numbers and any graphics supported by the selected board.
  2. Set the controllerConfigure the display layout, message sequence and supported effects using compatible software.
  3. Show it on the boardThe powered LED modules present the message according to the controller settings.
  4. Update the contentUse the local or remote update method supported by the selected controller and configuration.

Boards use different controllers and connections. In Halo's documented P10 project, the customer used a compatible mobile application over the controller's local Wi-Fi. That project did not use internet or cloud-based remote updating.

If you need to update a board from another location, discuss compatible remote control and connectivity before selecting the system. Wi-Fi, mobile-app control, scheduling and remote access are features to confirm, rather than features shared by every scrolling board.

What does P10 mean?

P10 denotes a nominal pixel pitch of approximately 10 mm: the distance between adjacent pixel centres. It describes the spacing of the display pixels, rather than the finished board's size or its update method.

Compared with a finer-pitch display of the same physical size, P10 has fewer pixels across that space. It is often considered for messages viewed from farther away; text shown at close range may need a finer pitch or a different layout.

There is no universal minimum viewing distance for every P10 board. Readability also depends on character height, text length, contrast, display size and how long the viewer can see the message. P10 does not establish the board's colour, weather protection or controller features. Not every LED scrolling display is P10.

Meiyad's single-colour module specifications show a manufacturer example with 10 mm pitch. For broader pitch and audience considerations, see LG's explanation of LED display technology. Halo's real P10 installation shows how modules were arranged for two different board shapes.

Match the colour and content capability

The LED modules and controller together determine which colours, graphics and effects a system can display.

Single-colour message boards

A single-colour board uses its supported LED colour for messages and numbers. It can suit notices, pricing and other simple information when the layout is readable.

Halo's P10 project used separate red and yellow boards. Their scrolling-text application is documented in the case study.

Richer visual requirements

Multicolour and full-colour systems provide different colour capabilities according to their modules and controller. Colour capability alone does not establish video playback or detailed image quality.

If images or video are central to your requirement, explore Halo's existing LED video-wall solutions. Discuss the needed content and available configuration before choosing equipment.

Choose size around the message and the viewer

A useful board size depends on what must be read, where people stand and the available installation space. The number of modules and their arrangement determine the available pixel layout.

  • Viewing position: estimate the nearest and farther viewing distances, viewing angle and time people have to read the board.
  • Message length: bring examples of your longest notice or price information, including the language and required characters.
  • Lines and character size: decide whether one message line is enough or several items need to appear together. Larger characters use more of the available pixels.
  • Space and orientation: measure the usable width and height. A horizontal format gives more room across a line; a vertical format needs a layout suited to its narrower width.
  • Mounting and access: consider the mounting height, visibility, enclosure space and how the board will be reached for service.

Show sample content before finalising the dimensions. A nominal board size alone does not tell you how many readable characters or lines it can show.

Keep messages readable in normal use

A working display still needs content that people can understand while passing or waiting.

  • Use a concise message and a character size suited to the viewing distance.
  • Keep the contrast and brightness appropriate for the surrounding light.
  • Give viewers enough time to read each message; adjust scrolling speed and hold time around the application.
  • Limit competing effects and excessive animation so the important information remains clear.
  • Check how much information appears at once, and review the actual message from the normal viewing position.

Indoor and outdoor boards need different planning

Outdoor use is possible with a suitable module, enclosure and installation. P10 is a pitch designation, not an outdoor rating.

Indoor or sheltered locations

Check viewing distance, ambient light, reflections and the intended mounting position. Consider ventilation, power provision, cable routes and access to the controller and modules for servicing.

A board behind glass may still be exposed to strong sunlight and heat.

Weather-exposed locations

Match the module and enclosure specifications to rain, moisture, sunlight and other site conditions. Brightness, protection of connections, thermal considerations and mounting all matter.

Allow suitable service access and power arrangements. Check the selected equipment's environmental specifications; neither a P10 label nor sealing alone establishes a verified IP rating for the completed board.

Applications for changing messages

Scrolling displays can communicate information that changes more often than a printed sign. Suitable applications depend on readability and the selected system's capabilities.

  • Shop and business names, promotional messages and opening information.
  • Office or institutional notices, announcements and schedules.
  • Changing prices or service information where the layout and update process suit the application.
  • Public information or welcome messages at entrances and waiting areas.

Share the message and where people will read it so we can discuss a suitable board.

Scrolling display or LED video wall?

Both can be digital signage. Choose around the content and the viewing conditions, rather than assuming that every LED display has the same capabilities.

Assembly, installation and support

Halo's scrolling-board work includes assembly, controller configuration, testing, installation and customer handover. The system and site determine the exact work.

  1. Assess and configure: discuss messages, dimensions, viewing conditions and updates; select compatible modules, controller and power supplies.
  2. Prepare the board: arrange modules and wiring within the frame or enclosure, with protection and ventilation suited to the selected design.
  3. Install and test: plan the mounting, power and appropriate electrical protection, then check operation and readability at the site.
  4. Hand over and support: configure suitable content, explain the supported update method and agree installation-specific support arrangements.

Power supplies, wiring, the enclosure and mounting are parts of a professionally planned system. Share the site's existing power provision with the installer. Keep service access available and report display faults or damaged enclosures/connections to the team.

What determines the scrolling-board price?

The finished installation is priced around its configuration and site requirements. There is no single price that applies to every board.

  • Physical dimensions, module type, pitch and colour configuration.
  • Indoor or outdoor requirements, cabinet/enclosure and mounting structure.
  • Controller, supported content and local or remote update requirements.
  • Power requirements, installation position, site access and cabling.
  • Assembly, testing, installation and agreed support scope.

Send your site location, usable width and height, example messages and update needs. We can discuss a suitable configuration and what the quotation includes.
